Caladium, commonly known as Angel Wings or Heart of Jesus, is a captivating genus of tropical plants celebrated for their stunningly colorful and patterned foliage. With around 15 species and hundreds of cultivars, Caladiums are prized for their spectacular leaves in shades of red, pink, white, and green.
Caladiums prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light than most colorful plants, but their pattern vibrancy is best with some filtered light. Direct sun quickly scorches the delicate leaves.
Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season. Water when the top inch feels dry. Reduce watering gradually in autumn as the plant enters dormancy. Avoid waterlogging, which causes tuber rot.
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix. A blend of peat moss, perlite, and compost provides ideal moisture retention and drainage. Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) is preferred.
Caladiums require warm conditions, ideally 65°F–85°F (18°C–29°C). They are very sensitive to cold; temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy and frost kills the tubers. High humidity above 60% is essential for lush growth.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). A lower-nitrogen formula helps maintain vivid color rather than promoting excessive green growth.
Remove yellowing or damaged leaves promptly. Allow the plant to die back naturally before dormancy. Repot tubers in fresh soil each spring when active growth resumes.
