Hypoestes, commonly referred to as Polka Dot Plant, is a delightful genus of tropical plants celebrated for their colorful and spotted foliage. The genus includes around 100 species, each featuring unique leaf patterns, sizes, and vibrant colors. Hypoestes plants are treasured for their ornamental value and are popular both as houseplants and garden accents.
Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the vivid pink, red or white spots that make Hypoestes distinctive. In low light, the spots fade and the foliage reverts to plain green. An east- or west-facing window is ideal; some direct morning sun is tolerated and intensifies colour.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1–2 cm feel dry. Hypoestes wilts noticeably when thirsty — use this as a watering signal, but act promptly as repeated wilting causes leaf drop. Reduce frequency in winter.
Use a standard well-draining potting mix with added perlite (3:1). Good drainage prevents root rot in this relatively shallow-rooted plant.
Optimal 18–27 °C; minimum 13 °C. Moderate to high humidity (50–60%) promotes lush foliage. Standard indoor humidity is usually adequate.
Feed every 2 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Reduce to monthly in autumn and stop in winter. Balanced feeding maintains vibrant foliage colour.
Pinch off the stem tips regularly (every 2–3 weeks) to maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevent legginess. Hypoestes naturally becomes straggly over time — do not hesitate to cut it back hard, as it responds vigorously. Remove flower spikes when they appear (the tiny lavender flowers divert energy from foliage and often signal the plant is nearing the end of its vigorous growth cycle). Treat as an annual or rejuvenate from cuttings every 1–2 years.
The most common method for propagating Hypoestes is by stem cuttings. This involves taking cuttings from the parent plant and rooting them in water or soil.
Hypoestes can also be grown from seeds, though this method is less common than using cuttings.
