Soleirolia, commonly referred to as Baby's Tears or Mind-your-own-business, is a charming genus of tiny-leafed creeping plants renowned for their lush, moss-like carpet appearance. The genus includes a single species, Soleirolia soleirolii, prized for its delicate foliage and ground-covering habit. Soleirolia plants are popular as houseplants, terrarium fillers, and fairy garden accents.

Habitat naturale
Soleirolia soleirolii originates from the Mediterranean region, particularly Corsica and Sardinia. It thrives in cool, shaded, humid environments, often growing in rocky crevices, forest floors, and along stream banks with consistent moisture and filtered light.
Storia e cultura
Soleirolia has long been cherished in European gardens for its whimsical, evergreen carpet effect. Named after French botanist Soleirol, it symbolizes delicate beauty and is used in traditional rock gardens and as a living mulch.
Utilizzi
Today, Soleirolia is favored for indoor terrariums, dish gardens, and as a trailing houseplant. Its fine texture creates lush mats perfect for miniature landscapes, aquariums edges, and shaded container plantings.
Conservazione
While widely cultivated, wild populations face threats from habitat loss and invasive spread in non-native areas. It remains stable in cultivation due to easy propagation.

Luce

Soleirolia (Baby's Tears, Helxine) thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Tolerates lower light better than most tropical plants — a north-facing window is adequate. Direct sun scorches the tiny, delicate leaves rapidly. An ideal candidate for terrariums and bathroom environments.

Acqua

Soleirolia requires consistently moist soil and must never dry out — even brief drying causes significant die-back of the delicate stems. Water frequently (potentially daily in warm conditions) and use room-temperature water. Excellent drainage is also needed to prevent waterlogging. This plant is ideal for self-watering pots.

Substrato

Moisture-retentive but well-draining mix: 60% peat or coco coir, 40% perlite. The fine, shallow root system prefers loose, aerated compost.

Temperatura e umidità

Optimal 13–24 °C; tolerates slightly cooler conditions. HIGH HUMIDITY is critical — Soleirolia is one of the most humidity-demanding houseplants and suffers visibly in dry air. A bathroom, kitchen or terrarium provides ideal conditions. Standard heated rooms are often too dry without supplementary humidity.

Concimazione

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter strength. Light feeding only — over-fertilizing causes yellowing and die-back.

Potatura

No pruning required. Trim back any dead or brown sections with scissors. Soleirolia spreads rapidly and can be divided at any time for propagation — simply pull apart sections and replant immediately in moist mix. An excellent ground cover plant in terrariums.

Divisione

Easiest method: divide established mats into sections, each with roots and stems.

1
Gently lift or unpot the plant to expose the root mat.
2
Tease apart into small clumps with roots attached.
3
Replant immediately in moist soil and keep humid until established.
4
Place in shaded, warm spot for rooting.
Talea

Simple trailing stems root quickly in water or soil.

1
Snip 2-3 inch stem tips with several nodes.
2
Place in water or moist soil; roots form in 1-2 weeks.
3
Transplant rooted cuttings to pots.
4
Maintain high humidity during rooting.
My Soleirolia keeps going brown and dying back — what's wrong?
The two most common causes are dry air or the soil drying out. Soleirolia needs constantly moist soil and high humidity (60%+). A self-watering pot and a position in a bathroom or enclosed terrarium are the best solutions. It will recover if you catch the dryness before too much damage occurs.
Can Soleirolia grow in a terrarium?
It is one of the best terrarium plants. The high humidity of a closed or semi-open terrarium exactly matches its needs, and its vigorous, low spreading growth makes an excellent ground cover beneath taller plants.
How do I propagate Soleirolia?
Simply pull clumps apart and replant immediately in moist compost. Even tiny fragments with a few roots will establish quickly. It is one of the easiest plants to propagate.
