Peace Lily, scientifically known as Spathiphyllum, is a popular genus of flowering plants renowned for its attractive foliage and striking white spathes. These plants are well-loved for their ability to thrive indoors with minimal care and are commonly grown as houseplants for their aesthetic appeal and air-purifying qualities.
One of the most light-tolerant flowering houseplants — Peace Lily survives in quite low light but produces flowers only in moderate to bright indirect light. A spot 2–3 metres from a window works for foliage; move closer to a window for blooms. Never expose to direct sun — it scorches rapidly.
Peace Lily communicates its thirst unmistakably: when it needs water, the leaves droop dramatically. This is a reliable, built-in signal — act within a few hours of seeing it and the plant will recover completely within 30 minutes of watering. Aim to water before this stage. Keep the soil moderately moist; water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry. Never leave standing in water. Peace Lily is sensitive to fluoride — use rainwater or filtered water if leaf tips brown.
Standard potting mix with added perlite (3:1). Retains moisture while draining well. Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) is ideal.
Optimal 18–27 °C; minimum 13 °C. Sensitive to cold drafts and air conditioning — leaves develop yellow or brown streaks. Moderate to high humidity (50–60%) promotes healthier, glossier foliage.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing — excess fertilizer causes brown leaf tips and prevents flowering.
Remove spent flowers and their stems at the base once they turn green and then brown. Cut yellow leaves at the base. Peace Lily naturally cleans indoor air of common pollutants. ⚠️ Toxic: all parts contain calcium oxalate, harmful to cats, dogs and humans if ingested. Keep away from pets.
The most common method for propagating Peace Lilies is by division. This involves separating the rhizomes during repotting. Ensure the parent plant is healthy before proceeding.
Some Peace Lily species produce offsets, or "pups," which can be separated from the parent plant and potted individually.
