Peace Lily, scientifically known as Spathiphyllum, is a popular genus of flowering plants renowned for its attractive foliage and striking white spathes. These plants are well-loved for their ability to thrive indoors with minimal care and are commonly grown as houseplants for their aesthetic appeal and air-purifying qualities.

Habitat naturale
Peace Lilies are native to tropical regions of the Americas and southeastern Asia. They thrive in warm, humid environments and are typically found in the understory of tropical rainforests, where they receive filtered sunlight. The natural habitat of Peace Lilies is characterized by high humidity, warm temperatures, and rich, well-draining soil.
Storia e cultura
Peace Lilies hold symbolic significance in many cultures. They are often associated with peace, purity, and prosperity. The white spathes of the Peace Lily are frequently used in floral arrangements for weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies due to their elegant and serene appearance.
Utilizzi
In modern times, Peace Lilies are primarily grown for their ornamental value. Their lush green foliage and elegant white flowers make them popular choices for interior decoration. Additionally, Peace Lilies are known for their air-purifying qualities, making them a popular choice for improving indoor air quality.
Conservazione
While Peace Lilies are widely cultivated and not considered endangered, their natural habitats are threatened by deforestation and habitat destruction. Conservation efforts are important to preserve the genetic diversity and ecological roles of these plants in their native regions.

Luce

One of the most light-tolerant flowering houseplants — Peace Lily survives in quite low light but produces flowers only in moderate to bright indirect light. A spot 2–3 metres from a window works for foliage; move closer to a window for blooms. Never expose to direct sun — it scorches rapidly.

Acqua

Peace Lily communicates its thirst unmistakably: when it needs water, the leaves droop dramatically. This is a reliable, built-in signal — act within a few hours of seeing it and the plant will recover completely within 30 minutes of watering. Aim to water before this stage. Keep the soil moderately moist; water when the top 2–3 cm feel dry. Never leave standing in water. Peace Lily is sensitive to fluoride — use rainwater or filtered water if leaf tips brown.

Substrato

Standard potting mix with added perlite (3:1). Retains moisture while draining well. Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) is ideal.

Temperatura e umidità

Optimal 18–27 °C; minimum 13 °C. Sensitive to cold drafts and air conditioning — leaves develop yellow or brown streaks. Moderate to high humidity (50–60%) promotes healthier, glossier foliage.

Concimazione

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing — excess fertilizer causes brown leaf tips and prevents flowering.

Potatura

Remove spent flowers and their stems at the base once they turn green and then brown. Cut yellow leaves at the base. Peace Lily naturally cleans indoor air of common pollutants. ⚠️ Toxic: all parts contain calcium oxalate, harmful to cats, dogs and humans if ingested. Keep away from pets.

Divisione

The most common method for propagating Peace Lilies is by division. This involves separating the rhizomes during repotting. Ensure the parent plant is healthy before proceeding.

1
Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently shake off excess soil to expose the roots.
2
Locate natural divisions in the root ball where new shoots are emerging.
3
Use a sharp, sterilized knife to cut the rhizomes, ensuring each division has at least one shoot and some roots.
4
Plant each division in a separate pot with a well-draining potting mix, water thoroughly, and place in bright, indirect light.
Polloni/figli

Some Peace Lily species produce offsets, or "pups," which can be separated from the parent plant and potted individually.

1
Gently pull or cut the offsets from the base of the parent plant.
2
Pot the offsets in a small container with a well-draining potting mix.
3
Water lightly and keep in a warm, humid environment with indirect light.
Why isn't my Peace Lily flowering?
Insufficient light is the main reason. Peace Lily produces flowers only in moderate to bright indirect light. Move it closer to a window. Also ensure it has not been recently repotted (roots prefer being slightly bound) and that it receives a monthly fertilizer feed during spring and summer.
My Peace Lily wilts every few days — is something wrong?
If it perks up fully within 30 minutes of watering, the plant is just thirsty — water slightly more frequently. If it wilts despite moist soil, this indicates root rot from overwatering. Check the roots for brown, mushy tissue.
Is Peace Lily safe for pets?
No. All parts of Spathiphyllum contain calcium oxalate crystals. Ingestion causes burning and swelling of the mouth and throat, vomiting and drooling in cats and dogs. Keep out of reach of all pets.
