Ophrys apifera produces flowers whose furry maroon-and-yellow lip mimics a bumblebee, though in northern Europe it is largely self-pollinating. A terrestrial tuberous orchid of calcareous grassland, it grows cool in autumn-spring and rests dormant in summer.
